Walking, Hiking, and Mountain Biking Trails

1. Whycocomagh Provincial Park Trail: Park car at campground entrance and use the various trails to lower and upper park.

2. Stewartdale Trail: Proceed up Highway 252, turn left to Roseburn and cross iron bridge (approximately 1 mile from Trans Canada Highway 105). Park car at Stewartdale Cemetery. Proceed on dirt road. At fork in the road, turn right to come out near Highway 252 and Highway 395 intersection. Turn left to come out at Skye Glen - Centreville Community Hall.

3. Mountain Road trail: Proceed on the Trans Canada Highway 105 to the Mountain Road, opposite the Legion Hall. Park car at the water tower, follow road and keep left to Lake Ainslie. Return by the same trail.

4. Mountain Road Wilderness Trail: Turn on the Mountain Road of the Trans Canada Highway 105. Park car at the water tower, go to intersection on Mountain Road and 104 snowmobile trail. Turn left and exit at the telephone office on Highway 252. Return by Highway 252, Highway 105 and up the Mountain Road.

5. Salt Mountain Trail (hiking only): Park car at campground entrance and follow the trail signs.

6. Skye Mountain Trail: Proceed on the Trans Canada Highway 105 west to Iron Mines. Park car at the water spring across the from the Orangedale turnoff. Proceed up Skye Mountain and return by the same route.

7. Campbell's Mountain Trail: Proceed on Highway 252 off the Trans Canada. Turn left across and iron bridge. Proceed through Roseburn to Campbell's Mountain. The trail goes to the top of the mountain and then retrace your steps back to the bottom.

 

Canoe Routes

1. Whycocomagh Bay: Launch canoe at the Whycocomagh wharf or opposite the Presbyterian Church on main street Whycocomagh.

2. Whycocomagh Bay, Skye River: Launch canoe at the Whycocomagh wharf . Keep right around Whycocomagh Bay to Skye River Entrance. Be careful of stumps and shallow water. Watch for beavers, muskrats, eagles, cranes, ducks, Canada Geese and deer.

3. Indian Island: Launch canoe at the Whycocomagh wharf or on main street. Proceed right to Waycobah First Nation, to point of land nearest Indian Island. Cross over, and proceed around the island. Return the same way, or at the east end of the island and cross over to the Provincial Park. Watch for beaver, muskrat, deer, sand pipers, ducks, Canada Geese and eagles. (One of the largest concentrations of eagles in Cape Breton is found here).

4. Arnold's Island: Launch canoe at the Whycocomagh wharf. Keep parallel to Trans Canada towards Iron Mines, crossing over to Arnold's Island, or Indian Island. Return by Whycocomagh Park.

Day Trips: Local

1. Drive to Baddeck along Highway 105. Visit the Bell Museum. Then drive to Baddeck Forks and hike the Uisge Ban Falls trail. Drive back to Whycocomagh on Highway 105.

2. Drive to Iona, by Route 223 and visit the Highland Village. Return to Whycocomagh by Route 223. Drive along the Trans Canada Highway and Bras d'Or lakes Scenic Drive to Orangedale. Visit the Orangedale Station Museum. Drive along the Bras d'Or lakes Scenic Drive to Marble Mountain. Visit the Marble Mountain Museum and Library. Return to Whycocomagh by retracing your route.

3. Drive to East Lake Ainslie along Highway 395. Visit the MacDonald House Museum. Continue along Highway 395 and drive around Lake Ainslie. Return to Whycocomagh along Highway 295.

4. Drive along Highway 395 until you reach Upper Margaree. At Upper Margaree turn onto the Egypt Falls Road. Drive along the road until you come to a fork and continue on to Piper's Glen. At Piper's Glen, park your car and hike along the Egypt Falls trail, where you will come to a waterfall. Return to Whycocomagh the same way you traveled to Piper's Glen.

5. Walk the Salt Mountain trail in Whycocomagh Provincial Park, then take a boat tour of Whycocomagh Bay. After your boat tour, try fishing in the bay or swimming at the beach in Aberdeen.

6. Travelling along Highway 105, drive from Whycocomagh to Baddeck. Visit the Bell Museum in Baddeck. Travel back to Whycocomagh on Highway 105 for supper. End your day with a boat tour of Whycocomagh Bay.

7. Leave Whycocomagh. Proceed to Cheticamp by Lake Ainslie to begin the Cabot Trail. In Cheticamp, visit craft shops, L'Eglise St - Pierre Church and Les Trois Pignons. Proceed to the entrance of Cape Breton National Park. Options for the rest of the trail are: whale watching, swimming and craft shops. Continue back to Whycocomagh on Highway 105.

8. Start in Whycocomagh. Travel the Bras d'Or Lakes Scenic Drive by heading towards Marble Mountain. Shop at Rita's Tea Room in Big Pond and visit Iona Highland Village in Iona
